The media has really created a lot of hype around this whole hoverboards catching fire type thing. Is it really that big of a concern however?
No, hoverboards aren't that prone to fires if they are properly made. You hear about all types of things with Lithium iOn batteries exploding. Everything from iphones to power tools, to tablets and computers have exploded. Anything with a lithium ion battery has the capability of catching on fire or exploding.
There's been literally millions upon millions of hoverboard self balance scooters sold and we've only heard of about 10 fire, that's actually a very small number in comparison.
Also, most all the fires have reportedly been from people doing pretty idiotic things such as leaving their board sitting on the charger for days on end when the instructions tell you not to charge your board over 3 hours. If you ignore the directions and safety warnings of anything bad things will happen.
All that said if you buy a quality hoverboard that's properly wired and has a properly made charger with a fuse and cutoff there really isn't that big of a concern of a fire. If you're that concerned keep it in your garage just as you would a car, boat or motorcycle.
